History of Chikmagalur:

Literally meaning ‘city of the youngest daughter’, Chikmagalur got its name because it was a land given as dowry to the youngest daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief who ruled Sakrepatna. Birthplace of many famous freedom fighters, intellectuals, poets and politicians, Chikmagalur once represented Indira Gandhi in the Indian Parliament.

Also credited with the founding of the Hoysala dynasty, their legacy is reflected in the Amaruteshwar temple in Tarikere district which was built by the kings of the Hoysala dynasty.

Chikmagalur also has a deep connection with India’s coffee cult as it is believed that the first coffee cultivation in India took place in 1670 at Baba Budangiri Hills. According to legend, Baba discovered coffee on his way to Mecca while crossing the Budan seaport. Mocha, Yemen. From there he brought seven coffee beans and planted them on the hills of Chikmagalur so that coffee became popular in the country.
